14th APRIL 2011

Another excellent evening was had at the very hospitable Ashstead Club. The match was arranged by Peter Ward for Ashstead and John Woodliffe for the Vets’ Club.

Last year we lost 4 – 1, so I’m glad to say we did better this year, losing 4 – 2!
Ian Robinson at No.1 lost in 3 straight games to a very in-form Mike Stewart;
David Leakey, after a busy day in the House of Lords, was too strong for Jim Flynn, winning 3/1; Rob Butler, coming in at short notice, had a great game against Jon Gransden in which he very nearly pinched the first game, but lost 0/3; Geoff Gill, having spent the day delivering groceries to Waitrose stores delivered a hard-hitting 3/0 to Alan Rutland; John O’Brien must have tired himself out telling jokes and Dave Murphy had the last laugh, beating John 3/0. The doubles pair of Kinder and Woodliffe lost 1/3 to that very good pair Steve Hunt and Ian Carr. Kinder and Woodliffe said they were saving themselves for the Vets’ Club semi-finals on 16th April....
