21st April 2011
Always a highly enjoyable fixture against Bexley took place on probably the hottest day of the year – 21st April 2011.
Over the years, although matches have been drawn, GB Vets have never lost. This year was no exception and we won 5/1.
A revitalised Albert Akin at No.1 was on first, and although he put up a brave fight, he was no match for his opponent and he lost 0/3. Karen Hume, with a strong, solid performance won 3/0 to make the match level at 1/1.
There then followed three very close matches, all going to 5, which were all eventually won by the GB Vets – Mandy Akin, match ball down in the fourth, recovered to win 9/6 in the fifth. Both Peter Young and Robert Smith, both with match balls in the fourth, lost it but came back in the fifth both to win 9/5.
Last but not least, Nigel Belle beat his old rival and fellow GB Vet John Prowse (who says he now only plays racketball!) with a convincing 3/0 win.
An excellent evening was had by all.
