17th March 2012

It was the turn of The Veterans Club to host the annual match between the two clubs this year and it was held at Colets in Surrey on Saturday 17 March.

First on court was the Veterans Club number one, Dave Clarke, who beat Damian O’Reilly, the Fitzwilliam number one 9/5  9/3  9/2. Then Peter Culver at two lost to Jim Flynn in a much longer match 9/1  5/9  9/2  5/9  0/9 to make the score one all.

Next on court was Tammy Bennett, the Vets Club number four, against Michael Roden. She lost 7/9  9/6  2/9  8/10, but the Vets Club number five, Ray Illingworth, playing at the same time, beat Cathal Mallon 9/2  9/5  9/2 to make the match score two all.

It was left to the Vets Club Captain, Geoff. Howes to play the decider against the Fitzwilliam captain Seamus Woulfe, who won 9/1  9/1  9/2 to clinch the match for the visitors.

This was the fifth time in a row that the Fitzwilliam club had won, so they retained the McVeague Cup which was presented to them at the dinner held at Queens Club later that day. The matches are usually close, but the Veterans Club will need to aim to prevent it becoming a run of six victories next year.
