5 March 2013
Our annual fixture took place at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. Once through Security you enter very well-kept grounds and just get a glimpse of some of the famous and attractive looking buildings. However, our players only had eyes for the 3 squash courts the Academy offers.
The first two players on court were Chris Ansell, our no.1, against Andy Stuttard. Chris is a very good and well-respected player, but Andy was not going to be intimidated by reputation and used his 44 years of youth to overcome the mighty Chris; a great game.
On another court the evergreen Lance Kinder was giving Dr Sam Coulter a bewildering time. Sam is a very experienced player and a good mover, but the drops and lobs from our master left him longing for his pint at the end of the match. However, he gave Lance a very good run for his money over five games.
There was a good clash between the two Andys. Andy Craig ran away with the first game 9-0; the match went on and on and it was a very close thing with our Andy (Hartley) just managing to clinch after five very good games.
Our Chris Sebire, a recent member, was out to show his colleagues that he deserved to be accepted as a member of our revered Club and that next year the O/65 players will need to watch out! His was a 3-0 win.
John Woodliffe played Edward Woods, Chairman of the Camberley Club, ex Guardsman and his tennis buddy. There was a great deal of mirth and comments like ‘You lucky b.....!’ and the match went on for a good hour with John sneaking it with a mis-hit!
We were then entertained at the Standard and all left there in a jolly mood!
