VC of GB v Bexley

21st February 2014

This always most enjoyable annual fixture took place on Friday 21st February.

The last minute withdrawal of the Bexley No.1 meant that Mandy Akin (recently crowned Ladies O50 National Champion) may not have got a good game. Help was at hand though with Mandy’s husband Albert stepping in to save Bexley’s day. This match was played in the best husband and wife competitive spirit (ie they were still talking to each other afterwards!) and ended with Mandy winning 9/3 in the fifth.

Andy Bonner at No.2 battled hard against a very youthful opponent but lost 1/3 as did Brian Cane at No.4 playing against his old Club.

Peter Young at No.3 had a long hard battle which he managed to eventually win 3/2.

So 2/2 with Nigel Belle at No.5 playing a rejuvenated fellow GB Vet Peter Lewis. Nigel however went down 0/3 so Bexley ran out winners 3/2, 13 games to 8 – a better effort than last year when the GB Vets lost 1/4.

Thanks to the Bexley non playing captain, John Prowse also a GB Vet, for arranging the match and for providing excellent main course, pud, cheese & biscuits all washed down with suitable amounts of beer, wine and port.
