VC of GB v Dorking

4th February 2014

With 2 regular players of this excellent annual fixture missing through injury, the GB Vets knew they would be up against it on this very damp February evening.

And so it was, with John Woodliffe and Nigel Belle nursing their wounds watching from the balcony, the doubles duo of Lance Kinder and last minute stand in Sam Coulter, lost the first match of the evening 2/3 - a marathon game, which could have gone either way. Why they played doubles HiHo to 9 instead of PAR to 15 we shall never know. Perhaps on count back, playing American scoring the GB Vets would have won - again we shall never know!

With Nos. 1,2 and 3 - Steve Jackson, Chris Sebire and Geoff Gill all succumbing 0/3 to worthy opponents it was left to John O'Brien at 4 to save a possible whitewash. Having failed to secure a win in the 4th, losing that 8/10, he then went on to win the 5th comfortably 9/2.

We were, as usual, in the expert hands of the husband and wife team of Bob (also a GB Vet) and Harriet Gray, the latter also manfully (!) standing in to play squash and produce a superb meal.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening of squash and friendship was had by all and although the GB Vets lost 2/4, we all departed into the wet night vowing to repeat the experience next year - except, hopefully, reversing the result!
