VC of GB v CHICHESTER

14 Nov 2015

As it was damp, windy and grey outside it was a good day to be inside in the excellent surroundings of Chichester squash club.

First on court was Ian Graham for the home team showing amazing speed and accuracy in comfortably taking the 1st 2 games from Paul Reader, until a sudden rush of errors caused the loss of the 3rd.  Normal service resumed with a swift run to 6-0 in the 4th with Paul unable to stop the loss, 9-3.  A call from the crowd of ‘come on Dad’ for Paul was greeted with incredulity, the more normal cry being ‘come on Grandad’.

Andy Hartley was then called to play newcomer Alan Coulthart on the other court, where he struggled to find his game until game and game point down in the 2nd.  Having pinched that game he then lost the 3rd being unable to counter Alan’s deadly accurate short game.  Despite having had match points in the 4th Alan succumbed in the 5th when desperation set in and he finally started to make a few mistakes.

In the meantime Tony Claydon had made short work of winning v. an injury restricted Nigel Warr and Barry Featherstone was already tackling an in form looking Chris Lock who took the 1st game with excellent court coverage.  However Barry came back strongly to win in 4.

The doubles next proved entertaining as always, John Woodliffe and his “father” Lance Kinder taking on Graham Fisher & Garry Williams,  Lance’s serves and drops combined with John’s lobs and drops being sufficient to see off Chichester’s challenge.  John’s exquisitely smart bright red squash shoes were much appreciated by the crowd and it was disappointing to see him return them later to lost property!

After a few drinks and a superb lunch, warm words of thanks were exchanged by Graham and John, a good time had by all and another win chalked up for VCGB.

We all look forward to the next fixture in 2016.
