VC of GB v Hurlingham

31st March 2016

The inaugural match against The Hurlingham Club, one of the world’s greatest private members clubs, took place in the brand new sports pavilion which is situated in their 42 acre site next to the Thames.

The match consisted of 3 singles and one doubles, the latter being played on a purpose built court with a moveable wall to accommodate either singles or doubles.

The GB Vets doubles pair of Nigel Belle and Roger Sulley were on first and struggled with overcoming, basically, a better opposition. At 0/2 down but then leading the third 12/10 it looked as though it might have been a longer battle, but it was not to be, eventually losing the third 15/12 and the tie 0/3.

Chris Lowry at No. 3, nursing a slight injury, went down 0/3 and Peter Young at 2, unable to find his usual rhythm against a useful left hander also went down 0/3.
So it was left to Andy Bonner at 1 to save the day which he did after a long and exhausting game – for Andy that is! At 2/0 up the third game see-sawed with serve and Andy was much relieved when he won it 9/6.

So a win for Hurlingham 3/1.

Many thanks to Nick Atkins (a fellow GB Vet) of Hurlingham for organising a most enjoyable evening – good squash, good food and drink, good company – what more could a man want?!

My thanks to Chris Lowry who has agreed to be Match Manager for this fixture next year – let’s hope he picks a team to reverse this result!
