6th May 2016
A new fixture! And an excellent one it turned out to be!
Organised by Mike Shattock and Rob Butler the match was
played at the Oxshott Village Sports Club, a thriving
Club with 3 squash courts (one glass back) amid an
atmosphere of bustling, happy activity.
There is always the concern with a new fixture that the
teams will be unevenly matched, but this was not the
case and Oxshott just managed to run out winners 3/2
although in ‘games won’ it was 9/9!
Dave Leach at No.1 had an excellent tough game. Having
survived and won the first 10/9 went on to win in 3.
Keith Searle at No.4 on an adjacent court had no trouble
and also won in 3. An excellent start 2/0!
Our hopes of a quick GB Vets win were then dashed as
Mark Eames succumbed 0/3 and Fabio Goriup, having won
the second 10/8 then went down 1/3. So 2/2 with all to
play for in the final match – a doubles.
Played in the best possible spirit the match see-sawed
to 2/2 and eventually the GB Vets pair of Nigel Belle
and Roger Sulley just lost 11/15 in the fifth.
So a win for Oxshott 3/2.
An excellent match, an excellent evening, definitely to
be repeated next year.
