21nd JANUARY 2016
We had the privilege of playing on their new courts, one of which was a purpose built doubles court.
As usual this was a most enjoyable evening although the GB Vets did not cover themselves with glory on the squash front.
Chris Lowry at No.1 lost a hard fought match 0/3 although if he had won the second game 10/9 instead of losing it 9/10 the result may have been very different.
Roehampton’s Nick Charteris-Black played 2 matches – against Robert Smith at No.2 which he won 3/1, all games going very close, and Graham Chambers at No.3 which he won, just, 15/13,13/15,15/13.
Nigel Belle at No.4 was 2/1 up against Charlie Lindsell but eventually lost it in the fifth mainly due to old age and lack of fitness! (Nothing to do with Charlie’s excellent play!)
The GB Vets christened the doubles court with the everlasting duo of John Woodliffe and Lance Kinder. A seesaw match against Nigel Clarke and Philip Greenhalph eventually saw the home team scrape home 15/13 in the fifth.
So a disappointing result for the GB Vets – Lost 0/5, 6 games to 14.
Depression soon disappeared though as the beer, wine, camaraderie and excellent meal took over, with the GB Vets vowing to seek revenge next time.
