When Berge Kay the Escorts team
manager (also a GB Vet) emailed to say he was fielding a
strong team, and knowing we had lost this fixture 1/4
last year, I knew the GB Vets had to respond and produce
a suitably strong team.
So Nick Dart at No. 1 was on first,
up against a youngster, comparatively! Hard game, goes
2/0 up, coasting, but lost the next, then strength,
accuracy and better play saw him eventually win 3/1.
Andy Bonner at No.3 on the other
court, playing good, tight consistent squash also went
2/0 up, but having faltered in the 3rd also recorded a
well deserved win 3/1. 2/0 up and hopes high for an
overall win.
Not yet though as Peter Young at
No.4 was up against a Ladies World Class Champion. Peter
was unable to counter her skill and accuracy and went
down 0/3.
Then came some truly sparkling, high powered, superb
squash. Fresh from winning the National Women’s O40
Tournament in Manchester in February Keeley
Johnson at No.2 matched power with power,
length with length and eventually wore her opponent down
with a thoroughly deserved 3/1 win.
Robert Smith at No.5 unfortunately
twisted his ankle in the third game and had to retire.
So the overall result, 9 games all, but importantly a
3/2 win for the GB Vets.
An excellent meal amply supported with various
liquids finished off a great evening of competitive fun.
