VC of GB v Hurlingham

30th March 2017

The second annual match took place at the excellent Hurlingham Club on 30th March.

First on was the doubles match on the purpose built doubles court. Whilst the GB Vets duo of Chris Lowry & Nigel Belle fought hard to obtain 1/1 the pressure was always on them and the Hurlingham pair, including fellow GB Vet Nick Atkins, eventually won 15/10 in the 4th.

Ash Chakraborty at No.2 played positive squash and recorded a 3/0 win.

Peter Young at No.3 was always in the hunt but after a hard fought battle succumbed 1/3.

So 1/2 down and the GB Vets needed Andy Bonner at No.1 to save the day. Not an auspicious start however – 0/2 down and staring defeat in the face at 9/9 in the third. With dogged determination Andy managed to win that game 10/9! Whilst he was clearly struggling with his fitness, perhaps too was his opponent, and the next 2 games saw Andy dig in and come out a deserved 3/2 winner.

So 2 matches all, 8 games all – a very honourable draw!

Then followed the legendary hospitality – fine wines and beer, superb choice of main and dessert courses and much jovial banter.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening, definitely one to be repeated next year!
