March 2017
This excellent annual match took place on St.
Patrick’s day – no green costumes or Guinness, at least
not before the game!
Adam Rich at No.1 and Nigel
Belle at No.5 were on first. Adam had a see-saw
match, 0/1, 1/1, 2/1, 2/2 and then unfortunately a
pulled muscle meant he struggled in the 5th and lost
2/3. Nigel on the other hand struggled even more against
a fit youngster – or was it that Nigel was unfit!?
Anyway he lost 0/3.
0/2 down.
Poor Karen Hume at No.2 had to
withdraw on the day of the match due to injury and her
last minute replacement, Dan Sweeney, had a relatively
easy win 3/0 – thank you Dan.
Peter Young at No.3 played fellow GB
Vet Fabio Goriup. Peter took the first
two hard fought games 9/7, 9/7 and then lost the next
two 1/9, 1/9!! In a repeat of last year Peter eventually
triumphed in the 5th.
2 all.
Robert Smith at No.4 had been
suffering for a few weeks with a calf injury and in
retrospect should not have played. But play he did
against Fabio’s wife Julie. It was clear right from the
first point that Robert was struggling and after 2 games
he retired gracefully.
So a 3/2 win for Purley.
An excellent match followed by an excellent meal with
much liquid refreshment and jovial banter concluded a
great evening arranged by Fabio.
