A fatal accident at the junction of the M25 and M26, which resulted in total gridlock in the surrounding area, meant that Mark Ainley and Nigel Belle, due to play doubles together, never made it to the match!

Mick Lowe at No.1 showed great touch to out play Stuart Jull in the first game. Returning to squash from a long-term shoulder injury Mick found Stuart’s constant running and retrieval hard to manage and Mick lost a very close fought second game. Stuart kept running and eventually took the next two games for a 3-1 win to Dorking.

Kim Ricks at No.2 played well but Mark Ambrose played a very intelligent game and with his deceptive style was able to just stay ahead in each game. Kim played some wonderful shots, but Mark was able to sustain his level and took the match 3-0.

Derek Wright at No.3 played Bill Lovesey who reminded Derek that he had won their previous Club encounter this year. Representing GB Vets brings a match play focus and a hard fought match with Bill coming back strongly in the third game, but Derek was far enough ahead to complete a 3-0 win for GB Vets.

Like Mick, Richard Mosley at No.4 took the first game against Tony Heron with some excellent squash, but Tony worked out the right tactics to thwart Richard’s better shot making and kept putting the ball out of reach. This strategy worked well for Tony who won the match 3-1.

Kim Ricks and Derek Wright teamed up for the doubles match playing against two very accomplished players David Buckley and our host Rob Crayston. Those in the gallery described the game as ‘very entertaining’ and in an incredibly close fought contest, Kim and Derek managed to take the first game in a sudden death play-off 15-14 and although behind in the second game came through to win the second game 15-13 and the match 2-0.

So a Dorking win 3/2

The meal afterwards was fantastic with three courses prepared by Rob and his team. A very enjoyable end to an excellent evening.
