Always a great pleasure to play against one of the finest clubs in the world – Hurlingham.
Where else would you find such superb facilities and have a choice of 4 main courses and 4
desserts for supper!?
First on were our doubles pair of Derek Wright and John Prestwich who always appeared to
be in the driving seat, and although had 2 close games winning 15/12, won 3/0.
Philip Courtenay-Luck, at No.4, a last minute replacement for an injured Kim Ricks, found
himself in a similar position as he has done in previous encounters with Hurlingham – a
mammoth, 5 setter where he fought bravely but came second!
Ash Chakraborty at No.2 and Mick Murray at No 3, had relatively easy games with the
results never in any doubt both running out 3/0 winners.
Newcomer to playing vs Hurlingham, Steve Jackson at No.1 appeared, from the knock up, to
have his work cut out as his opponent was perhaps half his age with not a grey hair in sight!
The first game went ok, 15/11 to Steve but his opponent fought back and won the second.
Although Steve just managed to clinch the 3 rd , 17/15, it was clear that he was running out of
steam, gasping for breath and wishing he could go straight to the bar! However, summoning
up all has reserves he came through a worthy winner 3/1.
So after the results over the last few years going Hurlingham’s way, this was the GB Vets
year winning 4/1.
Following an excellent 2 course meal washed down with appropriate liquids in the Harness
Room, a few words of thanks by the Vets Match Manager to the Hurlingham Club and in
particular Rodney Brewis (standing in for the absent Match Manager Matthew Eltringham),
for a superb evening, we all left hoping to avoid the strict penalties for non-residents
imposed on many restricted roads in the area and already looking forward to next year’s
encounter.
