The GB Vets fielded a slightly stronger team than last year in the hope of achieving a much-

needed win over the RAC Pall Mall.

Always a most enjoyable encounter with superb after match hospitality, things did not start

well as Ask Chakraborty at No.3 opened the scoring with a hard fought but 3/1 loss.

Then a see-saw match as Bryan Francis at No. 5 went 2/0 down got it back to 2/2 and finally

winning a much deserved 3/2 win, 11/8 in the 5 th .

An uncharacteristic off form Karen Hume at No.4 never really got into her stride and she paid

for her mistakes by losing 3/0.

The delightful player that she is, Keeley Johnson, at No.2 was threatening to go home as her

opponent was running very late and Keeley likes to get on early! Was this setback going to

affect her play once she eventually got on court? Not a bit of it! A brilliant performance saw

her go 2/0 up, then take a rest in the 3 rd and then come through a worthy 3/1 winner.

2/2 in matches, one to go!

Our hidden asset at No.1 was Dale McCarter, a relative newcomer to playing in GB Vets

matches. Playing James Gardner, the RAC Match Manager, both had similar squash levels so a

good game was in prospect. Whilst a match of the highest quality James, always seemed to in

the driving seat and he deservedly won 6,9 and 8.

So a 3/2 victory for the RAC. A word of thanks by Nigel Belle (non-playing Match Manager) to

James Gardner for organising an excellent evening of squash and the usual superb hospitality

in the Long Bar afterwards. We all left Pall Mall already looking forward to next year’s

encounter!
